Guwahati, Dec 27: A delegation comprising 16 members from the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) embarked on a journey to New Delhi today, all set to participate in the signing of a historic tripartite peace agreement scheduled for December 29. Notable figures among the delegation include ULFA president Arabinda Rajkhowa, Foreign Secretary Sasadhar Choudhury, Deputy Commander-in-Chief Raju Baruah Pranjit Saikia, and Pradip Hazarika, marking a crucial step toward reconciliation.
The anticipated peace agreement between ULFA, the Central government, and the Assam Government is slated to be signed in New Delhi at 5 pm on December 29, as disclosed by ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia. The significant event will witness the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Chetia, alongside other ULFA leaders, engaged in discussions with senior officials from the Union Home Ministry to finalize the agreement’s signing date. Today, further deliberations are set to take place, focusing on refining the content of the agreement.
It is noteworthy that in 2011, ULFA submitted a comprehensive 12-point charter of demands to the government. These demands encompass constitutional and political arrangements, reforms, and the safeguarding of the identity and material resources of the indigenous population of Assam. The forthcoming tripartite peace agreement holds the promise of addressing these crucial issues and fostering a renewed sense of stability and unity in the region.
