Delhi, Dec 26: India has taken significant measures to address the escalating threats in the Arabian Sea, deploying three warships, namely INS Mormugao, INS Kochi, and INS Kolkata. This move comes in response to a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the region. Additionally, the Indian Navy has mobilized P-8I long-range patrol aircraft to enhance surveillance capabilities.
The situation intensified after a drone targeted the Liberian-flagged MV Chem Pluto, carrying crude oil to New Mangalore port from Al Jubail port in Saudi Arabia. The vessel was hit approximately 217 nautical miles from Porbandar. The Indian Navy’s explosive ordnance disposal team conducted a thorough inspection upon the ship’s arrival at Mumbai harbor, revealing evidence indicative of a drone attack.
In light of the heightened concerns over attacks on commercial vessels, particularly those linked to Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Indian Navy is actively engaged in joint investigations. The deployment of guided missile destroyers and ongoing surveillance efforts underscores India’s commitment to maintaining a deterrent presence in the Arabian Sea. The Western Naval Command’s Maritime Operations Centre is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with the Coast Guard and relevant agencies.
