Delhi, Jan 07: The Delhi government has reversed its decision to extend the winter vacation in schools until January 10, retracting the earlier order issued on Saturday. The Delhi department of education acknowledged that the initial directive was issued “mistakenly” and assured that a final decision on the matter would be made on Sunday morning, as reported by news agency ANI.

The updated order from Delhi’s directorate of education stated, “Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024, regarding the extension of Winter Vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Further orders in this regard may be issued in due course.”

The previous order had extended the winter break until January 10 in all government-aided and unaided recognized private schools in the national capital territory (NCT) due to “extreme cold waves and IMD’s yellow alert.”

Delhi experienced another day of grey, foggy conditions on Saturday, with daytime peak temperatures reaching only 15.2 degrees Celsius and early morning lows settling at 8.9 degrees.

In a potential relief, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted a rise in temperatures over the next two days, with an approaching western disturbance likely to bring light rain on Tuesday. Cold day conditions are expected to abate by Sunday.

On a related note, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration ordered all schools in Noida and Greater Noida to observe holidays for students up to Class 8 until January 14, citing prevailing dense fog and cold weather conditions. The order, applicable to all state board, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other recognized schools, was issued by District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar. The minimum temperatures in parts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Gautam Buddh Nagar, have dipped to single-digit figures, prompting the IMD to issue a cold wave and fog warning for the region.
